How Many Garden Grids™ Can Water At One Time?
Ever wondered how many Garden Grids™ you can run simultaneously in your garden? It’s a popular question, and the answer depends on a few key factors. Let’s break it down so you can maximize the efficiency of your Garden Grid™ watering system!
Check out the video below, where Garden In Minutes® Co-founder Bryan walks you through the details and shares examples from our own garden. Keep reading for additional tips and insights to help you optimize your setup!
What Determines How Many Garden Grids™ You Can Use?
When it comes to watering with multiple Garden Grids™, water flow rate is the deciding factor. Water flow rate is influenced by two main factors:
- Water Pressure (PSI): Most homes have water pressure ranging from 35–70 PSI, which determines the force of water flowing through your system.
-
Supply Diameter: The diameter of your garden hose or water supply line directly affects water volume. A standard garden hose is typically 5/8", but some hoses are 1/2". Your spigot is likely connected to a 1/2″ or 3/4″ pipe. For context, a 5/8″ garden hose provides nearly 57% more water volume than a 1/2″ irrigation line, making it the better choice for maximizing water flow.
Be Mindful Of Accessories
Certain add-ons can reduce your water volume:
- Timers: Opt for high-flow timers with wide connectors to maintain water flow.
- In-line filters and pressure reducers: These are unnecessary for the Garden Grid™, which already has a built-in water filter to block debris and is designed to handle high and low PSI levels. ( Learn More: Minimum and Maximum PSI For Garden Grids™)
Pro Tip: Use Garden In Minutes® Add-Ons. We design and test all of our watering add-ons to ensure maximum water flow. This means you have full control over your garden’s watering needs without being limited by restrictive product designs.
How Many Garden Grids™ Do We Run In Our Garden?
Our garden has a 3/4″ water supply line, with 65 PSI, going into a hose spigot, with our Garden In Minutes® Garden Hoses attached. With this setup, we can comfortably run (5) 4×8 Garden Grids™ and (4) 2×8 Garden Grids™ with a moderate strength water stream (~3-4″ water streams) all at the same time.
How Many Garden Grids™ Can You Run at Once?
Here are conservative estimates (more details on this below) to guide you:
With 35 PSI:
- 6 (4×4 Garden Grids™) or 3 (4×8 Garden Grids™).
With 65 PSI:
- 12 (4×4 Garden Grids™) or 6 (4×8 Garden Grids™).
Why Are These Estimates Conservative?
You should be able to run more Garden Grids™ than listed here (like we do in our garden's details in the section above) but we keep these numbers conservative to account for variables like:
- Hose Lengths: Longer hoses reduce flow rate (friction inside the hose over longer distances progressively diminishes output).
- Elevation Changes: Slopes will lower or increase pressure by 1PSI for every 2.31 feet of difference between your water spigot and garden.
Key Factors to Remember:
- Hose diameter and PSI directly affect how many Garden Grids™ you can use.
- Keep water flow restrictions to a minimum for best results.
What If Your Water Supply Can’t Handle All Of Your Garden Grids™?
No worries! Here’s how you can make it work:
- Group Your Garden Grids™: Divide your Garden Grids™ into manageable groups that your water supply can support.
- Turn Groups On Individually: Use our 2-way or 4-way hose splitter to make switching between groups easy.
- Automate with a Timer: Multi-port garden hose timers can simplify the process, letting you water different groups automatically.
Pro Tip: Start by running a few Garden Grids™ at a time and gradually add more until you find a sweet spot for optimal performance!
