GIM™ Cages vs. Other Cages
-
Yes. The cage is designed to support both types. Determinate varieties benefit from the added height as the plant fills out and sets fruit. Indeterminate varieties have the 64″ support they need to grow and produce throughout the season.
Some indeterminate tomatoes may grow taller than the cage. At that point, the overall height of a raised bed plus cage can reach 5.5–7.5 feet tall, which may make harvesting difficult. Light trimming at that stage is completely normal and helps keep plants manageable.
-
Some indeterminate tomatoes can eventually grow past 64″. At that point, you can let the plant continue upward or lightly trim to keep it manageable.
Keep in mind that a raised bed plus cage can put the top of the cage 5.5–7 feet off the ground (depending upon bed height) about the maximum comfortable reaching height for most gardeners. For many, trimming at that stage makes harvesting easier and keeps plants productive and within reach.
-
Yes. Built from solid 4mm (6-gauge) galvanized steel with a dense support structure, it’s designed to hold mature plants and heavy fruit loads. It’s suitable for tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, gourds, and even melons with proper plant support.
-
Yes — with proper plant guidance.
The dense support structure and thicker steel are strong enough to support vining crops, including cucumbers, pole beans, gourds, and melons. As fruit develops, you can guide vines through or slightly outside the cage structure for additional support and airflow.
As with any vertical growing method, very large or heavy fruit may benefit from additional slings or support.
-
Most cages have wide rung spacing and only a few vertical supports. That means fewer places for vines to grab onto as they grow.
This cage uses a cattle panel–inspired structure with 8 verticals and rungs every 7.7 inches, giving vines more structure to climb from bottom to top.
-
We did. We’re based in Florida, and while testing these cages, Hurricane Milton passed directly over us. Fortunately, everyone was safe — and when we went out to check the garden afterward, the cages were still standing.
A lot of the tomato foliage had been blown around, but the plants were still supported inside the cages. The eight 9″ legs provide significantly more ground contact than typical hoop cages, and in that moment, it showed.
We can’t promise they’ll stay upright in every storm — but we were glad to see how well they held up in one as serious as Milton.
-
No. Each opening is about 5″ × 7.7″, which allows you to reach in for pruning and harvesting while still providing dense support for growing vines.
For larger plants like gourds and melons, you can guide developing fruit slightly outside the cage structure as needed, while still using the cage for main stem support.
-
Absolutely. The structure is suitable for cucumbers, pole beans, melons, gourds, and other vining or fruiting plants that benefit from strong vertical support.
-
The cage ships in two halves. The bottom half includes integrated steel sleeves, and the top half simply slides into them. Once assembled, it creates a stable, full-height structure without the need for clips or extra connectors.
-
The cage is made from dipped galvanized steel designed for long-term outdoor exposure. Like any steel product, surface wear can occur over many seasons, but the galvanized finish helps protect against rust and corrosion.
-
The cage has eight 9″ legs that push securely into the soil — giving it far more ground contact than typical 3–4 leg hoop cages. That extra stability makes a noticeable difference as plants get heavy and summer storms roll through.
We’ve even had them stay standing through hurricane conditions in our own gardens (we're based in Florida) a testament to the stability of the design.
-
The footprint is 10.25″ × 10.25″ and remains consistent from bottom to top, making it easy to plan spacing — especially within Garden Grid™ layouts.
-
Simply remove it from the soil and fold it flat for storage. It stores easily in sheds, garages, or small spaces during the off-season.
-
Very minimal. The cages ship in preassembled halves. Place the bottom half into the soil and slide the top half into the built-in sleeves. In seconds, you have a full-height cage — no tools, clips, or extra hardware required.
