Yes. The raised garden bed can be placed on grass, soil, concrete, or pavers.
On grass or soil, the open-bottom design allows roots to grow naturally and excess water to drain as intended.
On concrete or other hard surfaces, the bed works well as-is. Some gardeners choose to add a permeable liner or weed barrier if they want to make moving or repositioning the bed easier in the future, but it’s completely optional.
-
No. A liner is not required. The raised garden bed is designed to be used without one and provides proper drainage on its own.
If you’re placing the bed on concrete or pavers, some gardeners choose to add a permeable liner or weed barrier to make moving or repositioning the bed easier in the future. When placed on grass or soil, a liner is typically unnecessary.

Assembly time varies by bed size and experience level, but the simplified hardware and setup tips video keeps setup straightforward. Approximate assembly times for the beds are:
- 17" Tall Beds: Largest sizes ~40 minutes. Smallest sizes ~20 minutes
- 32" Tall Beds: Largest sizes ~60 minutes. Smallest sizes ~30 minutes
Times may vary depending on whether you’re assembling solo or with help.
Watch GIM™ Co-founder Bryan assemble a bed below and share tips to save time.Update since recording: Assembly has been simplified. All garden bed nuts are now flanged, so no washers are needed: just one type of nut and one type of bolt.
-
The amount of soil needed depends on the size of your garden bed configuration. Below are approximate volumes in cubic feet when filled with soil.
To reduce soil cost and weight, many gardeners use the hugelkultur method—filling the bottom portion of the bed with natural materials that will decompose over time like small logs, branches, sticks, and leaves, then topping with soil.
- For a 17" tall bed, you can fill the first 8" like this.
- For a 32" tall bed, you can fill the 1st half like this

Yes. Our raised garden beds are bottomless by design. An open bottom allows excess water to drain naturally, helps prevent oversaturation, and supports healthy soil aeration—key for strong, happy roots.
Beds with closed bottoms or built-in reservoirs can trap water and limit airflow in the root zone, which may lead to root stress over time. We keep things simple so water drains properly, roots can breathe, and plants grow better 🌱
-
Just about anything. Raised garden beds are great for vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers—from leafy greens and root crops to tomatoes, peppers, berries, and blooms.
To make planting easy, every order includes a plant spacing guide link with over 60 common plants, so you know exactly how much room each plant needs and can make the most of your growing space.
-
Yes—absolutely! Our metal garden beds are designed to perform well in hot climates and often handle heat better than many other bed materials. Proper airflow, drainage, and soil depth help regulate root temperatures and support healthy plant growth, even during long stretches of summer heat.
We test our beds in real-world conditions—including in our home state of Florida—to make sure they hold up where heat and sun are most intense.
