The amount of soil needed depends on the size of your garden bundle. Below are approximate volumes in cubic feet when filled with soil.

To reduce soil cost and weight, many gardeners use the hugelkultur method—filling the bottom portion of the bed with natural materials that will decompose over time like small logs, branches, sticks, and leaves, then topping with soil. We recommend a minimum of 9″ of soil for healthy root growth.
